Original SIGNED antique sepia-toned "silver border" silver gelatin photograph by famed Seattle, Washington photographer EDWARD S. CURTIS (1868 - 1952, American/Washington + Californian), titled "The Vanishing Race - Navajo." Depicting a band of Navajo disappearing on horseback into the Canyon de Chelly with the setting sun, the image is one of Curtis' most iconic and most sought-after images. Seattle, Washington Studio, ca. 1917 - early 1920s. Signed in black ink by the artist in bottom right within the border, and a black ink copyright symbol has been inscribed in the lower left corner of the image. The piece also retains its original and early Arts & Crafts pie crust/ batwing frame, backing paper, and two Curtis paper labels on verso - one being the 'legend' for "The Vanishing Race" and the other a poem penned by Ella Higginson in honor of the image.
